Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Under Armour have partnered to create the motivational lifestyle brand Project Rock. Dwayne described the brand on Instagram by posting, “Project Rock is an ideal. A commitment. We’re all a project, a work in progress and we all share one common goal: working hard to get better daily and chasing greatness. You all have the strength to chase your greatness and now I provide you with the tools.”
The first project included two limited edition gym bags designed for those who work hard and play hard. The Rock calls them #GBOAT – “Greatest bags of all time.” The Rock Clock App is the second installment of Project Rock. Since Dwayne is essentially the epitome of #hustle, we thought we’d check out the app and share our thoughts about it.
The Rock Clock App is available (and free) on both Android and iOS. Its key features include exclusive daily motivational messages from Dwayne, 25 custom alarm tones created by The Rock, and there is even a feature that allows you to wake up at “Rock Time” or the same time Dwayne wakes up each day – usually between 4-6am.
When you first open the app, you will be prompted to set a goal. There are several example projects such as gain five pounds of muscle, learn a new language, and earn that promotion. You then set a date you want to “crush this project by.” Then the fun part begins – setting your alarm and choosing one of the 25 amusing ringtones. Once you are set up, you will receive daily motivational messages from Dwayne.
The iPhone App
Since we tested the Rock Clock on an iPhone, we found some factors that complicate this app. You have to keep the app open and your phone plugged in and unlocked all night in order for it to function as an alarm clock. This is not the app’s fault but rather due to Apple’s iOS restrictions. If you have an Android device this is not the case. But it can definitely be a deal breaker for many iPhone users. If you accidentally close the app, your alarm will not go off. Other than that the app is very simple to navigate and the directions are very clear.
The app is completely free. There isn’t even an option for in-app purchases.
Between Dwayne’s voice waking you up and his daily motivational messages, the Rock Clock does get you pumped to start the day. It’s also a great daily reminder of your goals.
It offers unique alarm tones
Although it is a personal preference, we found most of the alarm tones to be fairly comical.
There is no snooze button
This can be a pro or con. We find this to be a pro since getting a few minutes of sleep in between hitting the snooze button results in poor quality sleep and disrupts your circadian rhythm. Plus if you really enjoy the snooze option, you can just set multiple alarms which would mimic a snooze feature.
The app must be open all night on iPhones
This can be quite inconvenient for iPhone users. If you forget to keep the app running and your phone charging and unlocked, your alarm will not go off. For us, that makes it seem somewhat unreliable. But this is not a problem at all if you have an Android phone. With an Android phone, the alarm will still work if the phone is locked.
You cannot set an alarm schedule for different days
Unlike many other alarms which allow you to set a different wake-up time for each day of the week, the Rock Clock does not provide for this feature. Each day you have to choose what time you would like to wake up.
Overall, if you’re a fan of The Rock’s or you are just looking for some extra motivation, you have nothing to lose by downloading this app. It’s a great reminder of your goals and the added encouragement from Dwayne is a nice boost to start your day off right.
